GEM Volunteer Position Description

Role Description
GEM is an acronym for a Genuine Empathetic Motivator.
A GEM is a volunteer companion to an older person (OPAL) who feels alone and disconnected from their community.
The primary role of a GEM volunteer is to
liase with, be guided and supported by your GEM volunteer coordinator.
provide an OPAL with weekly face to face companionship and support
build rapport and establish a professional but mutually beneficial relationship with our OPAL based on mutual trust and respect.
support OPAL to participate in their choice of meaningful social engagement once they are ready to reengage within the community.
inititally accompany OPAL to chosen social activity and assists with transport needs, as required.
assist with program discharge processes to enable OPAL to continue their chosen social activity upon completion of the program.
Be guided by and Report to their Volunteer Coordinator.
Essential Criteria
Up to date COVID vaccinations
Hold a full valid NSW drivers licence.
Car owner with valid comprehensive car insurance.
Willing to use own car to transport OPAL during weeklys social engagement activities. (petrol costs will be compensated)
Provide proof of criminal record check.
Willing to commit to and participate in12 week GEM Mentoring and Education Program. This equates to two hours face to face group participation a fortnight.
Ability to commit to a maximum of 2-4 hours per week for the full 24 week duration of the OPALs and GEMs Companionship and Support Program.
Show to be honest, reliable and empathetic.
Ability to work independently and in a group setting.
Open minded and non-judgemental of others.
Ability to community with a wide variety of people at various stages of life.
Excellent time management skills
